Phil Thompson paints in oil, both polychrome and monochrome (sepia). His subjects range from simple still lifes, to nudes, landscapes, and cityscapes.

Thompson shows his work regularly at the Bywater Art Market. Some of his pieces are on permanent display at the New Orleans Conservation Guild (see shows).

Thompson began his formal artistic training in the mid-1980s at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. In 1990, he won the Academy's Stuempfig Award for excellence.

In recent years, he was awarded a first place and a third place at the Poydras Home Art Show in New Orleans, LA, and the 2D Award at the Three Rivers Art Festival in Covington, LA.

Most recently, he won the 2008 Award of Distinction: Best Painting, 56th Annual Art and Crafts Festival, Fairhope, AL.

Thompson says he works in oil "because the medium is both malleable and durable. I can rework an image until I get what I want, and, when completed, it will last.

"Although my paintings are representational, I do not copy what I see. I try to emphasize what is important and to understate, or remove, what is not. I do everything I can to evoke feeling and mood."

A New Orleans native, Thompson lives in Metairie, LA. He can be reached at (504) 833-7933, or at cpct@aol.com.
